What You Need To Know About The ACT

The ACT is a standardized college entrance exam taken by nearly 2 million students every year. The test is offered 7 times throughout the year and is taken by Juniors and Seniors, although many students begin preparing as Sophomores or Freshmen.

The ACT is comprised of English, Math, Reading, and Science sections, with an optional essay writing component. Each section is scored on a scale of 1-36. Students receive a composite score – the rounded average of the 4 sections – for their college applications. The optional essay writing section is scored separately out of 12 points.

The test lasts for 2 hours and 55 minutes, or 3 hours and 35 minutes if the writing section is included. All sections must be taken at the same time.

Students may retake the exam up to 12 times. Typically, only the best score is sent to universities, although some schools require an average of all tests taken.
