Kathryn: Overall, I believe that true language learning and writing improvement stem from consistent and active practice typically through traditional tools like pencil and paper for language and writing skills, I do recognize the value of technology in certain aspects. For instance, I use specific PowerPoint presentations or documents to illustrate grammatical rules or writing structures. Internet resources also play a supplementary role to our paper-based work. For students writing in a second language or seeking to refine their spelling, punctuation, and grammar, I recommend tools like BonPatron for French, and Reverso or Quillbot for English.
How do you assess the individual needs of your students and tailor your use of technology to address their unique learning styles and challenges?
Kathryn: In assessing my students’ needs, I’ve found that some benefit from explanations of language rules or writing structures that aren’t covered in their regular classes. For these students, I use resources to illustrate these concepts or create accessible documents for quick reference. Online quizzes are also useful for evaluating their understanding and identifying areas for improvement. However, I emphasize that effective writing skills are primarily developed through practice on paper, focusing on clarity and organization.

Kathryn: I’ve found Kahoot to be quite useful for testing my students’ knowledge. It allows me to quiz them in a quick and effective way that they also find enjoyable.
For more advanced students, I introduce them to a program called ELAN, which allows us to play videos and audio while specifically coding for certain parts of the language that interest us. This program helps students understand the variations in language usage, as people often do not use standard forms in everyday speech. This concept can be challenging for second language learners, especially those in French immersion programs that primarily teach the standard and formal variety. ELAN is a great tool to illustrate these nuances to interested students.
In a virtual setting, Zoom has proven effective for conducting lessons. While technology is not the primary focus in language lessons, I am open to adopting new tools and techniques that enhance the learning experience for my students.
